Well, we made it through another year. At times we might wonder how we made it or how we survived in such difficult financial times. I know many people who have had difficult year including some of you in the church today. Some of you have had to deal with financial hardships. Others have lost their job. And others have shared with me the their sadness through the loss of a loved one or the illness of a parent, child or spouse. I have been moved by the amount of faith and trust you have shown. I know it doesn’t always feel like faith, but it is true. You have the kind of faith that moves mountains. The days that seem darkest and most desperate make us see what’s truly important. Jealousy, pomposity, rudeness, inflated ego, all that fades. What we are left with is faith and love, a faith and love that bears all things, even when it is painful, believes all things, even when it feels like anything but faith, hopes all things in hopeless situations, and finds the strength to endures all things. That is faith that does not fail.
This has definitely been what I have seen at St. Joseph Parish this past year. In this year or all years, we have done the impossible. Our pews are restored and the interior of the church has a new paint job; we have a new sound system and lunch shelter for our school. When I didn’t know where the money would come from, many of you came forward with anonymous gifts. When you were worried about your own finances, you kept supporting your parish. Thank you! Thank all of you!
I find it as hard to talk about money as you find it hard to listen to me. But Jesus faced his challenges head on and so must we. As always, I ask for first and foremost for your prayers. But I also ask that you put that prayer into action by making a pledge and participating in this year's Pastoral Services Appeal. This annual appeal supports the pastoral work of the Church of Orange. It helps to serve the poor and needy through Catholic Charities and educate children in the faith by supporting Catholic Education. It helps support vocations and our retired priests who have faithfully served the church for decades. It provides services to those incarcerated and support for the deaf community in the Diocese. Such work is faith and love in action and you make it come to life by means of your support and participation. By making a pledge to this appeal you will also help to continue the mission of our parish. As many of you are well aware, we have a great need for more space and places for people to gather. There isn't a day or night of the week when our building are idle. There is always something going on here at St. Joseph's. (Thank God for that!! It shows we are an active and growing community.) But we need more space and a safe place for our children. With your support of this appeal we can maximize the use of our current buildings. A total parish goal of $80,000 which includes $36,000 in support of diocesan ministries. $44,000 I will direct to complete the house on Garfield Street. Once finished it will become a pre-school and child care center. This parish project will help provide early childhood learning in a Catholic environment for your children and grandchildren as well as provide a safe place for children during adult parish ministry activities. The crowds thought they knew it all. They said, "Isn't this the Son of Joseph? That carpenters kid?” Jesus knew what was in their hearts, that they did not yet have faith in him. If he performed some kind impressive miracle, maybe then they would believe in him. Doesn’t do that. Jesus walks away praying they will come to believe. The real miracle for Jesus is faith in you and me. He does his work in us and it cannot be accomplished unless we allow his love to change our hearts. That’s what we experience here at St. Joseph’s from year to year and I am honored, as your pastor, to be a part of it. The pastoral work of our parish and the whole Church of Orange is only accomplished through our active prayers and participation. 2010 is a year of Hope, the start of a new decade. We have the chance put aside what’s childish and petty, as St. Paul admonished, and see the reflection of God’s love in ourselves and others. In doing so we touch the lives of people in the Church of Orange and provide for the growing needs of the parishioners of our own parish community. We’ve had a blessed 2009 because of you; I hope you’ll join me in doing the same in 2010.
