The covenant of marriage between baptized persons, ordered toward the good of the spouses and their offspring, is raised by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament primarily because God is the author of marriage. (CCC 1601,1603). In the sacrament of holy matrimony, Christ bestows his grace upon the couple to strengthen one another and strive for holiness, and to welcome and educate their children.
